ELRIK AND LUNATIEL avoided taking the main road to Galothia, deciding instead to travel across the wide-open rocky wastelands. The going was slow, but much safer for avoiding patrols.

An hour later, they spotted lights off in the distance. As they got closer, they dismounted and continued on foot.

The town of Galothia was about the size of Ash Amanth, but instead of fishing, its main trade was blacksmithing. Receiving regular shipments of processed iron ore from the neighboring mining town of Bedren, Galothia had become well-known in the region for its finely-crafted weapons and armor.

An occasional guard carrying a torch passed by as they snuck around, hiding behind the many stone buildings while searching for the alchemy shop.

Lunatiel pointed. “Look, there!”

“Keep your voice down! They might hear us,” whispered Elrik.

There on the main street, located between a clothier shop and a jeweler, was the alchemy shop. The building was a large two-story stone structure, with a black iron sign in the shape of beaker hanging above the main entrance. It read Perapipo’s Potions. Luckily, as was the case with most of the other buildings in town that night, there were no lights on inside.

“Excellent,” said Elrik. “It is dark inside. They are probably already upstairs sleeping. We can break one of the glass panes in the back door and enter there.”

Lunatiel shook her head and smiled. “Do not be silly- too noisy and messy. I will get us in.”

Pulling a small black leather case from her bag, she revealed a set of long, thin gray metal tools.

“What are those?” asked Elrik in a whisper.

“Do you mean you do not know? You really have lived a sheltered life, have you not? These are lock picks, silly. A thief’s most important tool!” she said in a raised voice.

Elrik put his hand over her mouth. “Keep your voice down! Lock picks? What are you doing with a set of lock picks? You really do have a criminal mind! Where did learn how to use those things?”

“When I was a traveling musician, I used to hang out with one of the other performers. He was an ex-thief and taught me a few things- one of them being how to open locks,” Lunatiel then winked. “He was quite cute.”

“Stop trying to make me jealous. We do not have time for your little mind games. Now get to work!”

Lunatiel carefully slid two of the thin tools into the lock hole as Elrik kept watch. Suddenly, a couple of drunken townsmen came stumbling down the alley, causing Elrik and Lunatiel to fall flat on the ground. Too drunk to notice even a fire-breathing dragon standing right before them, they continued on their merry way.

The two stood up again and Lunatiel continued working on the lock. A few seconds later, there was a click. Lunatiel grinned and turned the handle, opening the door.

“You did it!” whispered Elrik. “Let us go in, but be extra quiet. Do not forget- the owners are most likely upstairs sleeping.”

They tiptoed inside, carefully closing the door behind them.
